conventional political news, a surprise nonetheless, the des moines register endorsed mitt romney for president. the first time in 40 years the newspaper picked the republican nominee. while the editors praise president obama's early efforts to revitalize the economy through his stimulus plan, it concluded his record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years. joining me now for the politics of weather and everything else is obama campaign senior advisor david axelrod. good morning, david. let me start here with the storm. when you look at virginia where this is likely to be the swing state most affected, does anything worry you about that state being more or less paralyzed by weather for a couple three, four days? >> well, the first thing i think we should say is we're most concerned about people. this storm could affect 50 million americans. the president has been in close contact with fema and dhs and all the agencies that have responsibility here to make sure we're doing everything we can for people,

presidential election. governor romney knows that only too well that no republican has won the white house without winning ohio and the race right now in ohio is close to a dead heat. let's look at the two latest polls. first, our own cnn/orc poll of likely voters shows president obama with a three point lead. now that is inside the statistical margin of error. so that's about as close as it can get. and nbc "wall street journal" poll gives the president a six point lead in ohio. a little better for obama. still very close. now obama may be the top prize for the candidates right now l are other important battleground states. we'll take through over the course of the next hour in a way that only cnn can. john avalon and i traveled more than 1800 miles on cnn's battleground bus tour as the race for the white house reaches its conclusion. no mat wrer i ter where i go, t economy is the most important issue in this election. i've been traveling with john avalon. he joins me now as does my good friend christine romans. she joins me from washington. jim acosta from did he back to you, iowa, where

romney will have to start worrying about the same urgent challenge, how to stop the united states from falling over the fiscal cliff. this is, of course, the second cliff hanger that the united states has faced in two years, the first being the debt ceiling debacle. how did the world's greatest democracy start functioning so badly? maybe the next president can try to fix this broader problem. but first the fiscal cliff. unless congress acts, the spending cuts and tack increases that would be triggered automatically next january would take 5.1% out of the country's gdp in one year according to the congressional budget office. that would be one of the most severe experiments with austerity in history, larger than anything greece, spain, italy, or the united kingdom has tried. in fact, it's almost three times the size of britain's austerity program. and the results of those european programs have thus far been a dramatic slowdown in economic growth and a sharp spike in unemployment. once again, the rest of the world watches to see if the united states, the center of the global econom

dead heat. the president's getting the democrats. governor romney's getting the republicans so you want to look at the middle. 48% for governor romney. 46% for the president so a dead heat. both candidates are in the state today and will be back to make their case. because of ohio's diversity, what's the demographic composition. among nonwhite voters, he's getting 70% of the vote. cleveland, columbus, here in cincinnati. a growing latino population. the president starts with a head start. the white vote, 44% to 53% for romney. i would say this. if governor romney can keep the white vote closer to 40%, he has a chance and getting minority turnout, that was the president's recipe for success four years ago. >> i know that is so crucial when you look at ohio, what do you see there? >> the reason, it has -- you look at a couple of different places. the north of the state. cleveland, over to toledo. a place where we think we see evidence the auto bailout is helping. across the industrial north. that means a lot of blew collar white voters supporting the president. then you come here to

, it has 49 for president obama, 49 for mitt romney, but the margin of error, is two. pennsylvania usually goes blue. what happens if pennsylvania goes red now? and will there be a contest of this election, saying hey, you know what, people were disenfranchised. what do you make of that? >> well, first of all. i know after having contacted the governor's office all the polling places are making sure that places across pennsylvania are geared up and ready to go. and hey, the power gets back on. which i know the utility company has been working hard on. or d, we utilize the generators that are available to us, and primarily through fema. so i think that we want to ensure the right to vote, all the efforts must be made to make sure the polling places, people can primarily go to the place that they normally go to vote. and that all of our efforts as government leaders, regardless of party, but certainly as mayor of the city of philadelphia, i'm going to do everything i can to make sure all of our polling places are in working, operating order. i don't think we have any at this point th

campaign and the romney campaign hope the numbers will boost those economic arguments they've been making through this campaign and right into the final days of the race. we have complete coverage of what to expect this morning. let's begin with christine. she's got a look at what we could see. >> could see an unemployment rate that kicks up to about 7.9%. that's the forecast of economists surveyed by cnn money, soledad. 125,000 jobs added overall. for net new job creation. the important thing here is the trend. and it is the trend that has been so important to american families. american workers. and the two political campaigns, quite frankly. the president took office with unemployment rate at 7.8%, soledad. and then embarked on a massive stimulus plan and unemployment rate kept rising to 10%. but then started to come down. started to come down and is now back at 7.8%. and we got that number, of course, last month. and that was a big surprise overall. you look at the job creation. this is something that the obama administration talks about a lot. the president took office, there

race. president obama at 50%, mitt romney at 48%. that effectively is a dead heat given the poll's 3.5-point sampling error. cnn's national correspondent john king is in denver for us right now. john, you're taking a closer look at this poll. what else are you finding? >> reporter: wolf, because of that dead heat you can feel the intensity as both campaigns try to gin upturnout including in the early voting period which ends tomorrow here in colorado. both candidates doing well where they need to, you might say a slight edge for the president. i'll show you what i mean. in denver and bolder, the two biggest urban areas in the state of colorado, more democratic voters. 63% for the president, 34% for governor romney in the urban areas of denver and bolder. that's what the president needs to keep for turnout on election day. suburbs a smaller but significant advantage for the president in the denver suburbs. 53% to 45% for governor romney. if you look at the more rural, conservative, the rest of colorado, that's why governor romney's in this race. he's getting 55% of the vote to 43% for t

romney stumping in new hampshire, iowa, and colorado. they're running mates are also going nonstop. vice president is in colorado and paul ryan is holding rallies in pennsylvania, virginia, florida, and ohio. so ohio indeed could be the biggest battleground of the election. the race there is very tight. a just released cnn/orc poll shows obama ahead by just three points, well within the margin of error. an nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows a wider gap with obama leading by six points. president obama is about to speak at a rally in mentor, ohio. he is at least in the building, we understand. and so is our white house correspond dan loathian. the president's schedule is packed today. he isn't just campaigning. he is also keeping a close watch on the storm which he says really is his first priority. >> reporter: that's correct. white house officials saying that president did get updates, briefings overnight. this morning he went to fema headquarters in washington to get a briefing in person, to get a sense of what is taking place with regards to the flooding, the power situation.
